caring for our city

Try harder next time

Not everything pleases the eye, functional perhaps but do these improve the street scene?

Honeysuckle Road where residents self build kerb ramps instead of using
drop kerbs as required by SCC. These concrete ramps are illegal as they interfere
with the flow of water to drains and are a hazard if covered in snow or heavy leaf fall.
They are also very ugly and can potentionaly cause damage to mechanical road
sweeping machinery. We report these obstructions to the council.

We all want safer streets and a means of  slowing motorists using excessive speeds but wake up one morning and find this hideous flashing contraption outside of your house - in fact in many instances that will have been the last decent night's sleep for the unlucky resident.  As vehicles approach the speed is displayed by bright LED lighting day and night. At the top of the pole is a solar panel, very energy saving, but taking the cost of the sign as being several thousand pounds and the expensively priced solar panels need frequent  replacements, are they such a good idea? In some instances the flashing signs have been turned off following protests from sleep starved residents.

If the drive of your house leads onto a road, hopefully you have awareness to look right and wait until the road is safe to enter. Not so if you live in a block of flats, you need a Give Way sign painted onto the road. [Bitterne Road  West]

Three eras and styles of architecture compete for space in a modern city. Perhaps a case of the Good, the Bad and the Ugly but you make the choice. Image courtesy chunkyn.flickr.com

The Society reported this dangerous wall in Belmont Road to SCC pointing out the very real risk of injury or even a death if it collapsed onto the pavement. Copies of the report were also sent to the ward councillors.

Double jepardy there are two major cracks in the wall. Another potentially dangerous wall and it has been in this state for 10 years or more. What a pity that the council workmen recently installing the new street name plate and the post are not encouraged to report such a potentially dangerous structure to the SCC.  A report of this danger has been sent to the Ward Councillors. and we learn from the SCC engineers [October 08] that wall is currently stable and that an enforcement notice is not to be served on the owners.[image courtesy Will Temple]

A mis-mash of design.

Oh what an eyesore!

Some litter, a bit of graffiti on the new lamp post, cut the
old one off and leave a huge ugly stump. Unbelievable!
There are many similar examples dotted around the city.
