Titanic Engineers' Memorial
When the Titanic Engineers Memorial was unveiled in 1914, the event was attended by thousands upon thousands of Southampton residents. Funded by donations from their colleagues around the world, this monument shone a light on the heroism of Titanic's engineers.

On the night of 14th April, 1912, many of these men remained at their posts, keeping the electrics of the ship working so that those above them could see their way in the dark and have a chance at survival. Today, the memorial symbolises the heroism of those professionals who, a hundred years ago, built much of the world we live in today.

Southampton City Council and Twenty Twenty Television will carry out work on the bronze memorial to conserve it and return it to its former glory, as it would have appeared at its unveiling in 1914.

We would like to invite you to an unveiling event at the memorial:

Date and Time: Sunday, 5th September at 2pm
Location: Titanic Engineers Memorial, Andrews Park
Above Bar Street and Brunswick Place

The event will be filmed by Twenty Twenty Television as part of a new landmark series for Channel 4 (UK) and National Geographic (USA).

August 2010 Town Quay Park.  Friends of Town Quay Park held another successful picnic in the park on Sunday 1st August. Several CoSS members attended and the afternoon was given a French theme. A jazz trio supplied the music, Quilter's Vault was open with members of Southampton Guides in attendance. Members of SCC Parks Division were on hand to describe some proposed improvements to the Huguenot Memorial Garden. The President and Huguenot Society members were on hand to describe how many Huguenots had used Southampton as the port of entry. The French Church St Julien's was open for visitors [62 attended]. The group are now planning the next event for the Park for 30th November when a commemoration of the bombing of Southampton 70 years ago will be marked. See more detail on the website click here

July 2010 American Wharf. In March a Planning Inspector held an Inquiry into the proposal to convert the grade Ii listed building in Elm Street into residential flats and retail outlet. The Inspector recommended that the appeal by the developer should be rejected but the Secretary of State decided to grant planning permission on very stringent terms principally dealing with flood risk and methods of coping with flooding.
June 2010 Gardens to be given a new planning classification. The Minister for Communities Greg Clark announced that gardens and green spaces are to be removed from the "brownfield" classification [the same class for disused factories and waste industrial sites].

Many local areas have over the years lost their character and individual identity as developers bought up gardens and adjoining space from owners of large character house often built in the Victorian and Edwardian eras. The resulting blocks of flats giving the overall look of concrete jungles spoiled the local ambiance.

In future councils and communities will have a greater say on such developments and will hopefully oppose such developments.
